It pays tribute to the historic University of Al-Qarawiyyin in Fez, founded in 859 by Fatima al-Fihri—an enduring symbol of knowledge, the transmission of learning, and intercultural exchange. This reference embodies the values that inspire the orchestra’s artistic vision.
The ensemble is directed by Maestro Husam Hamumi, a musician specialized in Andalusian music and trained at the prestigious Andalusian Music Conservatory of Fez. With a distinguished background in both performance and pedagogy of this ancestral tradition, he brings rigor, sensitivity, and artistic depth to every musical endeavor.

Purity

The AlQarawiyin Orchestra grounds its artistic identity in the purity and faithful preservation of the Andalusian musical tradition, drawing inspiration from the transmission and interpretations of renowned masters of the repertoire such as Abdelkrim Raïs, Ahmad Loukili, and Tamsamani—figures who have played a fundamental role in safeguarding and teaching this musical heritage. The orchestra also performs works by the composer Abdessadek Chekkara, whose contributions have been instrumental in bringing Andalusian music into a contemporary context.
The repertoire is performed using traditional instruments such as the oud, qanun, violin, viola, cello, tar, and Andalusian darbuka, with full respect for classical forms and modal structures. From these deep roots, the orchestra embraces an openness to contemporary dialogue, while preserving the essence of a collective musical tradition passed down through generations.
